In the summer of 2018 I visited Russia to celebrate the World Cup with football fans from across the globe. In the four years since then the world has changed dramatically and I wonder if my experience was just an illusion.

A global pandemic, war, and a reckoning with systemic racism are among the issues we’ve had to deal with since the last World Cup. With regards to global sporting events, people are more and more questioning whether it is worth it to host such commercialized events like the Olympics and the World Cup. Let us not forget that these questions are not new but have been asked throughout history.

The way sport reflects our society, highlighting both the positive and negative, is closer than ever. This fact has affected my enjoyment for the Qatar World Cup. There are complaints that younger generations are losing interest in football, though the problems weighing on the minds of the young are problems that affect us all.

At the same time, there are new fans sprouting up around the world who find value in football outside the old systemic structures of the past. In this issue, we focus on these ‘FANATICS’ and consider what the future of football fandom is.

As we have stated in previous issues, football is not owned by the few, it belongs to ALL of us.SHUKYU Magazine is here to to investigate football in all it’s facets.
