Tonje Bøe Birkeland is a contemporary artist and since 2008 has worked with the art project THE CHARACTERS, where she stages and photographs herself as a female adventurer on an expedition in unknown terrain. Through her alter egos, Birkeland gives the woman a place in the landscape and at the same time explores the truth of history. Birkeland works analogically and authentically within her "fiction" - which makes the expedition itself as much a part of the project as the final photograph.

The book Character V — Bertha Bolette Boyd is a sequel to the book THE CHARACTERS, published in 2016, and follows the fictional character (#V) Bertha Bolette Boyd through 3 expeditions in Bhutan. The expeditions are documented through «Plates» (photo) and «Journal» (text) and «Objét trouvée» (found object in an artistic context). The book also has a fourth part showing «Additional Travels».
